Province of Manitoba proclaims October11-17th as Veterinary Technologist Week!

October 14, 2015

MAHTA is proud to announce that Ron Kostyshyn, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development has proclaimed October 11-17, 2015 as Veterinary Technologist Week in Manitoba! The MAHTA Board of Directors reached out to the minster's office in April of 2015, taking advantage of the opening of the Veterinary Medical Act, asking Mr. Kostyshyn to consider proclaiming October 11-17 as Veterinary Technologist Week as it is celebrated throughout Canada and the United States. Earlier this month we received an official proclamation certificate from the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development and we are happy to share it with you, our members and the public! Be proud and celebrate your chosen profession not just the week of October 11-17 but everyday.

Amendments to the Veterinary Medical Act was introduced today

May 20, 2015

Earlier today, the Manitoba government introduced a bill with amendments to the Veterinary Medical Act. This legislation governs how veterinarians and technologists are registered and regulated by the Manitoba Veterinary Medical Association. MAHTA was consulted by the province as the legislation was drafted to ensure the views and concerns of technologists were incorporated into the legislation.

The legislation focuses primarily on ensuring veterinary clinic clients get a clear upfront price when they get care for their pets, but it includes important changes for technologists including:

  • Adding technologist representatives to the Manitoba Veterinary Medical Association’s council to ensure technologists play a governance role with their regulator and the complaints process
  • Ensuring technologists get to vote on MVMA by-laws that affect technologists
  • Allowing for a more formal relationship to be developed between MAHTA and MVMA to ensure technologists have a seamless relationship with both organizations
  • Updating technologists’ titles from Animal Health Technologist to Veterinary Technologist effective October 2016. This reflects the trend across Canada and responds to requests from many members who want to use the new title. After the amendments pass, AHTs will be able to use either title until October 2016.

MAHTA will follow the legislative process closely to ensure technologists’ concerns are well-represented.
